ICY on the Rocks

The woman behind the counter at NYC ICY on Church off Coney confirms that this may be the storefront's last summer: They'll be open, she said, for the next couple of months, but may not reopen next year.

It's not an ideal location, but they make great stuff and we've been frequent customers. Other neighbors have organized a couple of excursions out there in the hopes of convincing them to stay; in any case, we hope they'll reconsider.

UPDATE: Izzy of NYC ICY says the big problems were a washed-out June and a freezer failure that cost them thousands in ICY.

Heartbreaking! Is there any way to convince them to move to Cortelyou road? I like my icy after dinner, but am not willing to walk to Church, alone, after dark.

Agreed. They really should try to find a spot on Cortelyou. I just don't go that way on my daily commute. They'd get a lot more traffic I think with the kids going back and forth from school, as well as people coming back from work or those looking for dessert options after dinner on Cortelyou.

I triple that vote! If they went for a smaller space, would it be that much more expensive to be on Cortelyou? There are so many spots.

I think they're great. They were located in L.E.S. near Guernica (a bar I used to frequent) was shocked when they moved a block away (when I off Turner Pl) Long live ICY!! come to Washington Av in Prospect/Crown Heights if Cortelyou can't fit you!

I'll add my vote for ICY on Cortelyou! I promise I would be a frequent customer.

Noooo! We need more places like ICY on Church, not moving everything good to Cortelyou!

Cortelyou!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have to agree with the Cortelyou vote!!

It would be great if there were more good places on Church. But the fact of the matter is, like the first commenter, I won't walk to Church alone after dark. I doubt that we are the only two people in the area who feel this way However, if ICY was on Cortelyou, I'd be a much more frequent customer! ICY is a great place and I'd hate to see them leave the neighborhood, but I do think their current location is curtailing their business somewhat. So for now, I have to add my vote to the Cortelyou contingent!

What is wrong with walking on church late at night? Is it less safe than Cortelyou?

And wouldn't you rather have two streets full of thriving restaurants than just one?

bklynartiste said...

Problem is, there aren't really a lot of "thriving" restaurants on Church. Sure there are eateries, but not enough for the same crowd going to Cortelyou for good eats.

Unfortunate about the freezer, but I really hope they reconsider and move to Cortelyou. I think they could make it up if they moved there.

By the way, there's a really good kosher (dairy and non) ice cream place near Kensington/Boro Park border for those who don't mind the walk. I've gone there before. Dahill and 15th Ave, not far from the end of Ave. C., between both the Church Ave. F and Ditmas Ave F.

Or there's the Carvel place on Church and .. I think E. 5th.

Well, I will change my vote if you all promise to patronize Church ave. Then ICY will be forced to move to Cortelyou by the laws of bloggerdom.

move salud to church!

christopher said...

YES!!! SALUD is AWEsome but the location might kill it!! Its too far from the throngs (and kindof hidden on H btw Rugby and Argyle).

bklynartiste said...

Wow, I never knew of Salud! I'm going to have to check it out!

For those of you who appreciate traditional italian ices, the business that should have a spot on Cortelyou is Ices Queen. It is located on Utica Ave., between Ave. H and Ave. I, one and a half blocks off Kings Highway.

Now just wait one second, for those who are thinking "that is just too far". If you can travel to Park Slope, Fort Green, Brooklyn Heights, BAM, and DUMBO, a trip to Ices Queen is not beyond your ability.

Ices Queen has been in business for more than two decades, at the same location. There are many flavors, but I prefer the foundation flavors of rainbow, and lemon. Whatever size cup you order, the portion is literally over the top. The small size portion is equivalent to the large size portion at almost every location. The ices have flavor, and are not filled with sugar.

On July 4th, I purchased a commercial size container ($26), with a box of 100 cups ($5), for a Familey barbecue; the children and adults were lined up.

For those who are not interested in italian ices, Ices Queen also sells ice cream. Does anyone remember when Baskin-Robbins really did have 31 flavors, or were close to it? If so, do you remember the flavor strawberry short cake? That was my FAVORITE. The closest flavor to that at Ices Queen is strawberry cheesecake. Delicious.

If you purchase a container of ice cream to take home, you have to arrive home within 15 minutes. The containers are filled above the top, wax paper is placed over the ice cream and a rubber band is used to keep the edges of the wax paper on the container. The container is placed in a bag - along with the cover.

Actually had no idea this place existed until I started hearing about this, which makes me sad, but I'd better get down there real soon and try it out before the unthinkable happens!

I stopped by NYC ICY last night on my way home and got the apricot ginger sorbet, based on a reco from the store person. It was amazing! But just too far from where live in West Midwood for popping by often. I won't travel more than a a few blocks for ice cream, unfortunately.

Ices Queen has been around for more than 20 years, maybe not that store, but the brand has been all over Bklyn for at least 50 or more as far as I can remember.

Also, a branch of Uncle Luigi's (still used that name, too) used to be in what is now Solo. It didn't last the summer. This was long before DP got hip, so maybe a new store on Cort would do OK.

All said though, I'll miss them as a stop on my bike rides in the park on a hot day if they close.

I have been dying to try NYC ICY but haven't been up there for exactly the reason that, at 7:45 when we're ready for something sweet, I can't haul my toddler from Cortelyou to Church. We'd be there 2x/week at least if it was on Cortelyou.

I walk on Church Avenue, after dark, quite often because I live in the neighborhood. And I've never had a problem. What's with all of the comments?

Brenda from Flatbush said...

Tina, better you than me. We've lived between Caton and Church for 21 years, and never have been happy walking those miserable, underachieving blocks of roll-down gates between Rugby and Coney IAve...the only "action" is usually the hangers-out in front of the bodega. Poor NYC ICY had a lousy location, they'd do great on Cortelyou; classic case of needing some 'critical mass' on a commercial strip in order to survive. We avoid La Huasteca for the same reason (although they will deliver).

BklynCyclist,

I believe Ices Queen also makes the brand that sell in stores (yellow container with green print). Ices Queen also has a few refrigerated trucks. I believe that is what brings in the big money, because there is not enough foot traffic to keep them in business for 20 years.

I have never seen a delivery truck driving through the boroughs, however, several years ago I was going to Ossining, in Westchester County. After White Plains there was a serious traffic jam. An Ices Queen delivery truck, from the Utica location, was in an adjacent lane. I was completely surprised.
