Community Garden Organizing

Allison McDowell emails:

We wanted to let you know about another project we're working on-- A Ditmas Park Community Garden. There is a huge piece of property on Marlborough and Albemarle Road--it backs up to the subway tracks. It belongs to a home on Marlborough, but the women who owns the house is willing to let the neighborhood use it and transform it into a community garden/park.

We're having a meeting about it on November 11th at 10am over at the space with food and drink from The Farm on Adderley.

Right now, we're working with Susan Siegel of FDC, Jan Rosenbery of Friends of Cortelyou and other neighbors that have committed to helping out. We're trying to get as many people involved so we can make this thing happen.

This is sooo nice of the owner and such a great idea. I keep looking at the half done boarded up house on Argyle and Albemarle and thinking that if they were actually asking a semi-reasonable price (like $500K), the neighborhood association should get together, buy it themselves or work on the city to buy it, tear the eyesore down and put in a little community garden or playground. This is a lot easier though - as it won't take as much money and landmarks might not be as involved, given it is just empty land already. I'm in and will be there on November 11th.

I'm a very inexperienced gardener, but I would love to be a part of this in some way. My only claims to gardening knowlege are that I 1) managed to grow a mint plant on my fire escape without killing it, and 2) Once illustrated a book about urban gardening. Excellent idea and I'll be at the meeting if I can!

great plans -
maybe someone can use the kids in the neighborhood and teach classes about gardening?

Who are you looking to have at this Nov 11th meeting?
Anyone interested?
Only locals?
Only those seriously doing the main planning?
Thanks!

I have a 12 year old boy who would love to get his hands dirty.

This is a fabulous idea, and many thanks to the homeowner.

The comment that was deleted was totally off the topic of the post and poster also posted the same comment About the 9/11 truth Debate at Lolita Bar on at least three other posts, thus I will leave it under the Sander movie post and will now delete everywhere else. Sorry everyone.

to answer Alison's question at 11:11, we are looking for as many people as possible. This garden is going to take a lot of help so we need as many hands as possible.
So, please come on by.
