A reader emails:
I live near Newkirk Ave and walk along it everyday to the subway. Without fail, each time the street is besieged with garbage. I've noticed, there are no public garbage cans from Coney Island Ave in towards the subway. Would it stop people from littering? I'm not completely sure, but I think it would help. How does one solicit garbage cans? 311?I dunno. Anyone?
I'm getting close to going out there and picking things up myself--but I think it'll just depress me when it gets further trashed.
Am I the only one annoyed?
And please do send us your rants and raves about the neighborhood...particularly in August, which is a slow news month, even by, er, fast-breaking local standards.

I feel the exact same way, so you are not alone. I've wondered myself how hard it would be to get trash cans installed on Newkirk between CIA and Newkirk Plaza. The chicken bones especially, are disturbing.
Normally I am against the death penalty, but a death penalty for litter bugs should be considered. Seriously though, I can't quite imagine what makes people throw their trash in the street, the sidewalk, the train station, the train. . . .
You can request litter baskets via 311. But if you want more than one or two you might be better off writing the Dept. of Sanitation. Do you think that baskets were there at one time and have 'disappeared'???
Isn't this something the Flatbush Development Corporation (which is on Newkirk) could/should help out with?
just looked at website for FDC and no one is listed whose responsibilities include garbage removal, just housing issues. maybe they could provide guidance for whom to contact?
I tried to get garbage pails where I live and was informed that in order for the Dept of Sanitation to provide garbage bins there needs to be a business nearby.
And I quote "Why would you have garbage, are you coming out of a McDonald's? If not, if it's residential, you shouldn't have any garbage and don't need a pail."
So good luck!
There is a link on th Dept. of Sanitation website to request garbage cans. Do a search. Put one in for each corner. If enough people do you will get them. Just don't fill it out anonymously.
What about newspaper recylcing cannisters?
Is there anything possible on that route-- maybe with VoxPop as a sponsor?
I'd say a good portion of the Cortelyou garbage is newspaper related-- especially on those pesky windy days.
311 is definitely worth a call. i have called for trash cans twice in the neighborhood where i own my shop and they have been very responsive. in fact, there were new trash cans within a week, where there were none at all before! perhaps the visual of a can will promote better behavior!
a lot of garbage cans tend to come from city counsel reps. i think they have a discretionary budget for this sort of thing.
lol. once i asked vox pop what to do with my finished newspaper, assuming they had a recycling spot (being all granola and such). i was shocked when they asked me to just put it in the garbage cans outside
Sander here from Vox Pop. Sorry to hear someone told you to put your newspaper in the garbage. We do recycle a lot of paper, in clear bags, with our paid commercial garbage carrier. We have paper recycling bins downstairs in the office, but not really any one for upstairs, in the store. I'll create a paper recycling bin for upstairs and put it right above the stairwell to the office, so it will be easy for us to help you recycle newspapers, in the future.
Hi guys! I sent in the original email. I just called 311 and requested a garbage can for the corner of Argyle and Newkirk Ave. Let's see what happens. I think I'll also try to contact the Department of Sanitation directly and the FDC. I'm on a mission.
Maybe when le bistro francais opens at that corner it will arrive with a rubbish bin?
Here's the link to rquest a litter basket:

It seems the laundry mat on corner of Argyle & Newkirk is in violation of sanitation law by having uncovered trash. that stack of trash cans is really disturbing.
I also made a trash can request.
sander, that's great! i always thought at least someone else would want to read the paper if I'm finished with parts of it. a spot where people can put their papers but also where people can go check for sections they want to read (or even magazines) would be a great thing. and at the end of the day, they can be handily collected for recycling. thanks!

Alright! I've now put in a request with 311, went to the sanitation department's website to put in another request there, and also emailed someone from the Flatbush Development Corporation asking for help. We will see. Hopefully if cans do arrive people will actually use them. If not, I'm not really sure what else to do.
Wait until you see that street corner trash cans get filled with household and commercial garbage.
Let us know if you get any kind of feedback from the city, and we'll blog it -- ditmasparkblog at gmail.com
This is the best post on this blog in a long time. Nice to see everyone making the effort. Providing links, calling, and making changes at businesses. This is what neighborhood blogs should all be about.
Also distturbing to me is the amount of garbage laying around on Newkirk Plaza itself...where there are at least some garbage cans available.
And while we're on the topic of Newkirk Plaza, I really wish that those corrugated metal barriers on the sides of that part of Newkirk extending over the subway tracks would be replaced by something a little more attractive. Those things are such eyesores.
The corrugated metal barriers were installed in the 1960s. Prior to that a low fence was there. A nice high wrought iron fence would be nice. It would be safe, and also attractive.
You may want to contact the Flatbush Development Corporate (FDC). They do commuity organizing and such. May know who to contact for trash cans... Newkirk has such potential to be cleaner!
the unfortunate, but likely way to clean up the garbage on Newkirk would be to report violations of garbage removal and dirty sidewalks on business's/residences that don't clean up. it's unfair that the people who drop the garbage can't be penalized, but residents/owners have to take part in cleaning up Newkirk Ave.
if you realy want trash cans call your newly elected Councilmember. They can cut through the redtape and get trach cans in place very fast.
To the "anonymous" who wants more people to report residents who don't clean up the garbage in front of their houses: Please NOT! I clean up every day. In a couple of hours there's more. What are we supposed to do, stand there and clean as the assholes drop it? (And I DO mean "assholes": I've had to clean human excrement, too.
There use to be some garbage pails at the corner of the block on 16th street and H. However, they were removed bc kids would set them on fire. So now there are none.
