"Every time I see another hipster walk down the street around here, I say to myself, 'Ka-ching,'" an apartment-owning neighbor told us yesterday.
(Not to make this a tiresomely gentrification-obsessed site -- and thanks for keeping it more or less sane in the comments section.)

Too much talk about gentrification and you'll have to get rid of your anonymous comments option- or have Brownstoner-like knife fights.
But I like the site- keep up the good work.
For the record: Native Son lives in a rent-regulated building, but it is elevated, not walk-up. And he'd just as soon rip out his own front teeth as mug anyone. He's too busy taking his grandaughters to the library.
I think these conversations engender knife-fights, because being a Native Son and walking around a neighborhood you've lived in for years and being seen as a potential mugger by newcomers makes you think of things like mugging.
NS has a very good point about collapsing personal safety and crime issues with racism and economic cleansing. I just wish he hadn't resorted to an appeal to fear.
Ben, you don't make the slot machine noise everytime you open the front door? I thought was all did that :P
It has been my ultimate goal since moving here in 2003 to make Ditmas Park/Beverley Square West the next Davis Square, Somerville, Massachusetts.
And so far, my master plan is working... working... working!
Except for the fact that it's still 40 minutes each way on the subway, and no matter what I do to change that, alas, it still escapes me!
FOILED AGAIN!
Soo.... um.... yeah, whatever happened to the cornerstone bar?
Noise rule violations??
So called "tough guys" who talk about mugging people who they just don't like are just punks. Pay no attention and they will go away. Mr. Tough Guy should be happy thet there are people willing to invest in "his" neighborhood.
Dont act like people in your nabe don't get robbed! I had a friend have his chain natched 'cause he went to the wrong Church Ave. train station (should have taken the F to Kensington)
Skanky as it is, I actually prefer Church Ave on the B/Q to Church Ave on the F--fewer of those long, empty F-train corridors and more people even at odd hours. The street, unfortunately, is another matter.
Just found this blog--nice place to visit, even if I am from NoProPaSo (North of Prospect Park South, my name for "Caton Park," just waitin' for it to catch on...um, like, "BoCoCa" ya know...)
I love these made up neighborhood names for marginal areas. Ditmas Park was gentrified from day one. I mean it was built as a community for wealthy Brooklynites following the electrification of, and elimination of grade crossings on the Brighton Line, approx 1907-1910.

Who is Native Son? And what does he have to do with this post?
